I think Ravenloft was summed up on some boards as "and then a lich jumps out of a tree and kills you."
It's supposed to be a PC meatgrinder if that's your bag. |

Not really, but given your typical DM/Player tandem, I can imagine how it gets boiled down to that. Its Gothic Horror Storytelling, with an emphasis on the story in the tradition of Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allen Poe, and HP Lovecraft.

I am a huge fan of Ravenloft.
The horror element is key to make it work. It's not a setting where you want characters that are casually dispatching undead and making wisecracks. You want players that can roleplay. |
